Benefits

Environmental

Ethanol blending directly addresses climate change by eliminating 736 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the last eleven years, significantly improving air quality and contributing towards India’s Net Zero 2070 commitment. Its cleaner combustion process also reduces particulate matter and unburnt hydrocarbons, leading to measurable improvements in public health. The shift towards alternative feedstocks such as maize and sweet sorghum also reduces pressure on water resources compared to traditional crops like sugarcane and rice, making ethanol production more sustainable in the long term.

Economic

The ethanol blending programme has saved ₹1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange by reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil, helping stabilise the rupee and strengthening the domestic economy. Even as global fuel prices surged after 2021, India managed to maintain petrol and diesel prices at stable levels for more than three years, insulating consumers from external shocks. This stability has encouraged economic planning and growth, while the production and transport of ethanol have created thousands of jobs and supported industries across rural and semi-urban areas.

Farmer Empowerment

For nearly five crore sugarcane farmers and their families, ethanol blending has turned a once-volatile market into a dependable source of income, ensuring timely payments and eliminating the cycle of arrears that plagued the sector before 2014. In addition to direct benefits, the ethanol economy has created over five lakh direct jobs in production facilities and countless others in logistics, storage, and ancillary services, revitalising rural economies and providing farmers with stable livelihoods and greater financial security.

Energy Security & Geopolitics

By replacing 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil with ethanol, India has significantly reduced its dependence on oil imports, which previously accounted for around 85% of national consumption. It has redirected billions of rupees away from foreign oil suppliers towards domestic farmers and industries. This shift has not only strengthened the country’s energy security but also enhanced its geopolitical resilience, allowing India to withstand global supply chain disruptions and price shocks more effectively.
