What is Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP)?

Ethanol is a renewable biofuel produced from plant-based materials, offering a high-octane and clean-burning alternative to petrol. It is a renewable and high-octane fuel derived from crops such as sugarcane, maize, surplus rice, and damaged food grains. Ethanol is blended with petrol in specific proportions, such as E5 or E10 or E20, to create a cleaner-burning fuel that reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions, supports agricultural economies, and enhances energy sustainability.

India’s EBP Journey

Starting from a modest 1.53% blending rate in 2014, India reached the 20% blending target in 2025 through coordinated action involving government agencies, oil marketing companies, vehicle manufacturers, and farmers, setting a global benchmark for speed and scale of renewable fuel adoption.

Global Case Studies

Countries like Brazil, the United States and Thailand have successfully integrated high ethanol blends into their fuel systems for decades, with Brazil’s widespread use of E27 and E30 offering a proven example of how ethanol can be a safe, high-performance, and sustainable transport fuel for large automotive markets.
